Nowadays infectious diseases are a major global concern and one that particularly imparts on developing countries. In fact, many of those have no appropriate health care, resulting in a huge number of deaths per year.
“Across Boundaries” focuses not only on these diseases, but also on doctors that try every day to change them. This module is about infectious diseases and humanitarian medicine.

Dr Jens Lundgren is Professor of Viral Diseases and a practicing infectious diseases specialist, at Rigshospitalet, Copenhagen. In 1994 he established CHIP – Centre for Health and Infectious Disease Research, a Global Centre of Excellence in Health, which is recognized as a WHO Collaborating Centre for HIV and Viral Hepatitis.
In 1993 Jens Lundgren took the initiative to start the EuroSIDA cohort study, which is current on its 4th round of EU framework programme funding. Further, he co-chaired the HIV in Europe initiative from its conception in 2007 until 2014 and is still an active member of its steering committee.
He has more than twenty years experience of leading major international research on infectious diseases complications in people living with HIV and transplant recipients.
His primary areas of interest in research are clinical and public health aspects of the HIV infection itself, as well as its infectious and non-infectious associated morbidities. Jens is author or co-author of more than 480 papers in scientific journals and book chapters.
His group runs research activities in more than 35 countries and collaborates on clinical observational cohort studies as well as randomised controlled trials with more than 250 research institutions in Europe, USA, Canada, Australia and Latin America.

Prof. Jesús Rodríguez-Baño completed both his MD degree and PhD at University of Seville, Spain. Specialized in Internal Medicine, he early started Infectious Diseases training and later in 2000 concluded his Master in Epidemiology and Clinical Research at University of Granada. He coordinates the Infection Control and Antibiotic Stewardship programs in Hospital Universitario Virgen Macarena, Seville, and since April 2015 he is President-Elect of ESCMID.
His main areas of interest in research are multi-drug resistant pathogens (molecular basis, clinical implications, therapy and control), bacteraemia and healthcare-related infections. He is author of 220 peer-reviewed articles in scientific journals.
Márcio Silveira da Fonseca

Dr. Márcio Silveira da Fonseca concluded his MD degree at Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, and specialized in Infectious Diseases. He later went to London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine where he completed his Master in Public Health in Developing Countries.
Since 2009 he has been a member of Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF), where he has worked as HIV/TB advisor in India, Ethiopia, and Democratic Republic of Congo. During the Ebola outbreak in Sierra Leone back in 2014, Dr. Márcio da Fonseca worked on the field, in the Ebola Centre, established by MSF. During that time he was also nominee Expert Consultant in Epidemiology for Ebola Preparedness and Response by the World Health Organization (WHO).
He currently works as an Ebola Advisor in the headquarters of MSF Amsterdam.
